Lynx’s Courtney Williams drops 30-piece vs. Mercury for fifth straight win

Courtney Williams waxed hot in the first half to lead the Minnesota Lynx to their fifth straight win, routing the Phoenix Mercury, 111-77, at Mortgage Matchup Center on Monday.

The Lynx improved to 7-2, while the Mercury, who suffered their sixth straight defeat, fell to 2-8.

Williams, along with Olivia Miles, set the tone for the Lynx, who outscored the Mercury, 35-22, in the first quarter. Minnesota scored 67 points in the first half, the third-most in any half by a road team in league history.

The 32-year-old Williams shot 8-of-10 in the first half for 19 points. She finished with a season-high 30 points on 13-of-20 accuracy, including 3-of-3 from the three-point line. She added five rebounds and two assists.

The 23-year-old Miles provided ample support with 19 points, four rebounds, nine assists, and three steals. Anastasiia Olairi Kosu added 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocks off the bench.

The Lynx are atop the Western Conference, as they have held down the fort even without Napheesa Collier, who is still recovering from her ankle surgery. She is expected to suit up this month.

Williams has carried the cudgels in the absence of Collier, averaging a career-high 17.8 points on top of 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.3 steals in her third year in Minnesota.

Before the season, Williams stressed the need to step up without Collier, who has been a runner-up in the MVP race for the past two years.

“I feel good about it. We had to play without Phee last year, so you know, we’re going to hold it down until she comes back,” said Williams in a report from The IX Sports’ Terry Hortsman.

So far, so good for the Lynx.
