Lynx nearly make WNBA history with dominant 1st half vs. Mercury
The Minnesota Lynx aimed for their fifth straight win as they visited the Phoenix Mercury at Mortgage Matchup Center on Monday. The Mercury, on the other hand, have lost five straight games.
The Lynx are coming off a victory against the Chicago Sky, 79-58, at Wintrust Arena on Friday, notching their fourth consecutive victory on the road.
Minnesota started like a house on fire against Phoenix, scoring 35 points in the first quarter, led by Courtney Williams and Olivia Miles. The Lynx continued to pour it on in the next frame, outscoring the Mercury, 32-18, to break the game wide open. They led at halftime, 67-40.
Minnesota achieved a milestone with its dominant showing in the first half, according to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou.
“The Lynx’s 67 points in the first half versus the Mercury are tied for the third-most in any half of a road game in WNBA history,” wrote Philippou on X.
“Minnesota also shot 75% in the first half, the best by any team in a half this season.”
The Lynx are on a mission to avenge themselves after getting upset by the Mercury in the semifinals, 3-1, in last season’s playoffs despite being the top seed.
They have played well without Napheesa Collier, who has yet to play this year due to an ankle injury. Initial reports said the three-time All-WNBA First Team member could return to action this month.
As of writing, Minnesota still has a sizable lead against Phoenix in the fourth quarter. Williams has 28 points and four rebounds, while Miles has 19 points, four rebounds, nine assists, and three steals.
