Liberty’s Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones applaud Knicks on NBA Championship

As the New York Liberty beat the Washington Mystics on Sunday afternoon, 86-64, the team would give its flowers to their NBA counterpart, the New York Knicks. With the Liberty watching the Knicks’ NBA Finals run, ending in a championship for the first time in the franchise’s history since 1973, stars Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones would speak on the events.

After recording 14 points, 12 rebounds, and seven blocks, Stewart would speak about the Knicks and how exciting it was to watch them complete the NBA Finals run, and even shared the goal of the Liberty winning another WNBA title.

“We’re all really happy for the Knicks,” Stewart said, via Myles Ehrlich. “First of all, it was really exciting to watch them and be a part of it. I was in my house last night, and there were fireworks going off until who knows when. New York is the best city in the world, and for them to be able to bring an NBA championship home after 53 years, it’s huge. Our goal has always been a championship, and we know we were short on that last year, but yeah, the city would be crazy. Let’s talk about that in October.”

Stewart would also speak on how happy she is for Knicks captain Jalen Brunson, who scored a whopping 45 points in Game 5’s 94-90 win, even saying how she and Jones share the same mindset in wanting to bring titles to New York. As for Jones, who recorded 20 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks, she described the feeling when watching the game and the fans around her.

“I was outside. I went to a nice little area in SoHo and watched the game,” Jones said. “The energy was really amazing, and I wanted to take the opportunity to be a part of that, because these things really aren’t guaranteed.”

At any rate, there’s no denying that the Liberty want to follow in the Knicks’ footsteps and add another title for the city.
