Liberty move on from 2 players after blowout loss to Valkyries

The New York Liberty went through a renovation period during the offseason, parting ways with 2024 championship-winning head coach Sandy Brondello and signing star forward Satou Sabally, among other moves. Fans have yet to see the full extent of these changes, however, since both Sabrina Ionescu and Sabally have battled health issues early in the campaign. The organization is still making roster adjustments as well, as it tries to find its top form in 2026.

New York waived guard Julie Vanloo and released forward Alex Fowler, per Annie Costabile of The Athletic. They both played in Thursday night’s 87-70 home loss versus the Golden State Valkyries. Vanloo posted two points, eight assists and four turnovers in 16 minutes played, while Fowler went scoreless and recorded one steal in 15 minutes.

The former was always a temporary option with Ionescu eventually returning from a foot injury, and the latter is just an unfortunate reminder of how unforgiving professional sports can be sometimes. Both women will try to quickly find new teams.

Meanwhile, the Liberty are hoping to operate with more efficiency going forward. Satou Sabally made her franchise debut against Golden State, posting five points on 2-of-8 shooting with four rebounds, two assists, one block and two turnovers in 16 minutes of action. When at full force, she should form quite the imposing frontcourt duo with all-time great Breanna Stewart. New York will look even more intimidating when Sabrina Ionescu returns.

The Liberty (3-2) may have to tinker with their squad a bit more before solidifying themselves as the potential team to beat in the WNBA.
