Giants QB Jaxson Dart sounds off on split-second decision after Jameis Winston fight

The New York Giants and Miami Dolphins’ joint practice on Thursday afternoon became increasingly heated, with several fights and multiple players removed from the field at the Baptist Health Training Complex.

Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart found himself close to one of the incidents involving veteran Jameis Winston.

Dart told reporters that he did not initially know what had happened to Winston. When he looked over and saw Winston’s No. 19 jersey in the middle of the confrontation, his immediate reaction was to go toward his teammate.

“I didn’t see what happened,” said Dart. “I just looked over and saw the red 19 jersey [Winston] and I was like, ‘I gotta go. I gotta go help my boy! I don’t know what’s going on over there.'”

Winston had reportedly been involved in the scrum after New York wide receiver Calvin Austin III took exception to a late hit from a Dolphins defensive back near the sideline. Winston absorbed a hard shot and appeared to throw a punch before the confrontation expanded, with players from both sides joining the scrum. Staff members held Dart back to prevent him from getting involved.

The Winston incident was one of several disruptions during the practice. Miami offensive tackle Austin Jackson was removed after throwing a punch at Giants rookie linebacker Arvell Reese. New York linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux then shoved Jackson to the ground after Jackson made contact with Reese’s helmet. Jackson was replaced by Caedan Wallace before eventually returning for the final team-drill period.

Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor was also removed, while the practice featured additional confrontations involving players including JC Davis, Keith Cooper Jr., Ronnie Harrison Jr. and Zeek Biggers. Abdul Carter also exchanged words with Dolphins tackle Patrick Paul during pass-rush drills and threw a punch at his helmet, drawing a flag.

Nevertheless, Dart enjoyed one of his best practices of the summer, connecting on several downfield throws and repeatedly finding tight end Isaiah Likely for productive gains.

The Giants and Dolphins will meet again Saturday in a preseason game at Hard Rock Stadium.
