LeBron James declares Spurs ‘lucky as f**k’ to get Victor Wembanyama after David Robinson, Tim Duncan

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James is widely considered the greatest No. 1 pick of all time. It is difficult to argue against it. Well, at least for now.

Because it has become increasingly clear that San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama is out to grab the throne.

The Spurs landed Wembanyama in 2023 after winning the lottery. They were tied with the Detroit Pistons and the Houston Rockets with a 14% chance of getting the first pick.

It was the easiest decision the Spurs made since drafting Tim Duncan with the No. 1 pick in 1997, and it was not lost on James.

“San Antonio continues to get lucky as f*** with these generational, talented, IQ, smart, but like, listen, ‘Keep the main thing the main thing.’ David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Wemby,” said the four-time MVP on “Mind the Game.”

“Guys who have this dead-serious mentality. They have these horse blinders on, and they’re like, ‘The mission is the mission.’ It’s all that matters, and it’s pretty remarkable to see.”

The Spurs acquired Robinson with the first pick in 1987. The team, however, had to wait for two years as Robinson had to fulfill his active-duty obligation with the US Navy.

His arrival changed the trajectory of San Antonio, paving the way for Duncan and Wembanyama.

James also gushed about Wembanyama’s talent.

“He has the ability to do things that we haven’t seen in our league ever. His IQ, you could tell by the way he talks, by his demeanor, that he knows the game and that he was taught the game the right way,” added the four-time champion.

Only time will tell if Wembanyama will supplant James. For now, he is busy leading the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
