Latest update on Iran’s potential FIFA World Cup potential replacement

As the days near for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, several Middle Eastern states find themselves in a bit of turmoil. While reportedly, USA-Iran peace talks are going on, Iran’s World Cup participation remains questionable.

With the tournament set to begin on Jun.11, 2026, uncertainty remains over Iran’s participation because of their recent military conflict with the USA, who are co-hosting the World Cup with Mexico and Canada. As doubts still remain, a major update recently emerged over the prospect of Italy replacing Iran at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A few days ago, Italy’s World Cup dreams were shattered when they failed to book a slot in the main tournament. Out of the FIFA World Cup for almost 12 years now, Italy could now find a chance to slither in.

A conditional two-week ceasefire is currently in effect between the two countries, but it remains uncertain if peace will be achieved after the negotiations. If war continues, Iran’s spot at the 2026 World Cup will sink further. After Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup, their coach, Gennaro Gattuso, resigned from his position.

However, a small ray of hope emerged after Iraq’s assistant manager, Rene Meulensteen, claimed [via talkSPORT], “Through the AFC, we are the highest-ranked team. So we would then take Iran’s place. And then UAE might step in to replace us to play the winner of Suriname and Bolivia. But there’s also rumours that if FIFA makes the final decision, they might push the highest-ranked FIFA team to replace Iran, which is Italy.”

However, Andrea Abodi, the Italian Minister for Sport, holds a completely different opinion. Abodi, as per Football Italia, views this possibility as ‘highly unlikely’. “It’s a continental matter,” he said. “It really seems very difficult to me that there could be an issue, unless one arises within Europe.” When asked if Italy should enter the World Cup based on their continent, Abodi claimed, “I don’t think so, and I wouldn’t even hope for it.”
