Lane Kiffin defends controversial Ole Miss comments after backlash

While Lane Kiffin’s exit from the Ole Miss Rebels’ football program was nothing but dramatic, the new LSU Tigers head coach made some controversial comments about the recruiting process during his time working for the University. On Monday, Kiffin turned around and defended those comments.

The 51-year-old head coach stated that his comments were based on what parents said about Ole Miss, as he was just explaining how some families didn’t want their children playing for the Rebels due to Oxford, Mississippi’s complicated racial history, according to Matt Hayes of USA Today. Kiffin stated that he was not sharing his actual opinions about Ole Miss whatsoever.

“People don’t read the actual words I used in the article,” claimed Kiffin. “I said, ‘A parent said,’ that’s not me saying it as my opinion.”

Lane Kiffin apologized to the Ole Miss program not long after he made those viral comments. He seems to now be attempting to clear the air completely with his former school.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss has been in talks with the SEC to potentially punish Kiffin, as well as Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian, over the comments they made about the University. Nothing has come to fruition as of yet, as the conference is likely investigating the situation before making an official announcement.

While it was an ugly divorce between Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin, the Rebels seemed to have found their new head coach in former defensive coordinator Pete Golding. The first-year head coach stepped into the role for the College Football Playoff, where he led the Rebels to the semi-finals round, losing the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl 31-27 to the Miami Hurricanes.
