Yankees OF Spencer Jones’ comment on George Lombard Jr. highlights budding duo

The New York Yankees believe that the time to rely on a few of their top prospects is now, and the likes of Spencer Jones and George Lombard Jr. have not been letting the team down. They played a huge part in the Yankees’ 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, combining for four hits in seven at-bats on the night. In fact, Jones even drove Lombard in on a double in the second inning, opening up the scoring for the Yankees on the afternoon.

Jones and Lombard have been going through some growing pains to start their life in the big leagues, which is to be expected considering how young they are. (Jones is 25, Lombard is only 21.) But the Yankees youngsters are building some chemistry to the point where it’s starting to feel routine for them to combine for winning plays to help give their team a victory.

“He told me after he scored: ‘Man, I feel like we’ve been doing that a lot’ – where he gets on base and I hit a ball in the gap and let him run around the bases,” Jones told reporters after the game, via SNY Yankees on X.

The two have spent some time together down in the minor leagues as well, so it’s not like this chemistry they have in the big leagues is anything new. The Yankees, of course, are expecting these two to keep up this level of play, as the team envisions them to be long-term fixtures in the everyday lineup.

It will be interesting to see what Jones’ role will be once Aaron Judge returns to the lineup. He is currently starting for New York in right field, which is Judge’s primary position. But if he keeps getting timely hits for New York, it will be hard for Aaron Boone to keep him out of the lineup on most nights.
