Lakers news: Insiders hit Rob Pelinka with ominous warning after $12.5 billion sale
Following the pending sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to the duo of Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, one of the biggest questions that came up in the immediate aftermath is what that meant for the future of general manager Rob Pelinka. When it was revealed that the Buss family wanted to sell off their remaining minority share, that question once again reared its head.
During a recent segment of the ‘Lakers Collective’ podcast, reporters Trevor Lane and Pete Zayas suggested that Rob Pelinka’s job as general manager is not as secure as it might have been before, as per Jeff Smith of USA Today’s For The Win.
Both Lane and Zayas made clear that while Pelinka’s future could be in doubt, it’s also not hard to envision him remaining in his current position as he gets to know and work with new ownership.
Pelinka was initially hired as Lakers general manager in 2017, and has since also gained the titles of vice president of basketball operations and president of basketball operations. The Lakers have won one championship with Pelinka at the helm in 2020. He was responsible of the free agent signing of LeBron James and then the trade for Anthony Davis that ultimately led to the title run.
Among his other significant moves as general manager were the Russell Westbrook trade in the 2021 offseason that effectively split up the Lakers’ championship-winning core, and the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
This offseason, Pelinka retooled the roster around Luka Doncic via free agency after LeBron James’ departure to the Philadelphia 76ers.
