Kyle Busch gets touching tribute from fans, broadcast on Lap 8 of NASCAR Coca-Cola 600

NASCAR lost a legend this week. On Thursday, Kyle Busch passed away at the age of 41. Busch was scheduled to race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday.

As the Coca-Cola 600 runs on Sunday, during the eighth lap of the race, fans and the broadcast celebrated the life of a NASCAR legend.

NASCAR began the day with a beautiful tribute to Busch in the pre-race.

“No one ever feels fully prepared to speak at a moment like this, but we can all agree, this was Kyle Busch’s home. Every race track was Kyle Busch’s home.” NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell said in the pre-race tribute. “He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when in reality he had already proven everything.”

As the cars took the track, they were not in their normal two-by-two formation for the pace laps. Alongside the lead 54 car, driven by Ty Gibbs, was a noticeable empty spot. The drivers came out in a missing-man formation, leaving the top spot in the front row open for their fallen competitor.

As touching as the tributes were, nothing prepared fans for what was to come in Lap 8, honoring his number.

The broadcast went silent, as every fan raised their hand in the number eight. The only sound was that of cars speeding by, and performing in the manner that Busch held so dear.

As the NASCAR season moves on, the tributes for Kyle Busch will continue to pour in.

While the race continues, Zane Smith leads the Coca-Cola 600 62 laps into the race.
