Kendrick Perkins predicts record DPOY run for Victor Wembanyama
The Victor Wembanyama era is here, and Kendrick Perkins believes that it could be around for a long time. This week, Wembanyama was awarded the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in a unanimous vote. The Spurs star is the first unanimous selection for the award and the youngest player ever to win at 22 years old.
This year, he’s averaging 3 blocks, 1 steal, and 11.5 rebounds, finding ways to affect the opposing team’s offense. In the most recent edition of the Road Trippin’ podcast, Perkins said he believes that Wembanyama is going to go on a successive streak of winning Defensive Player of the Year.
“He’s going to win the next five or six straight. If he’s on the floor, he’s available, he’s going to win the next five or six straight. He’s arguably to be honest, he’s the best defender that I’ve seen with my own eyes in my lifetime. And I grew up watching Hakeem Olajuwon play with Kevin Garnett. I’ve seen and witnessed some hell of defenders. I’ve never seen nothing like this. He is a system in itself on the defensive side of things. And I’m predicting right now, he’s going to win the next five Defensive Player of the Year Awards. Hands down.”
Dwight Howard currently holds the record for most consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards, having won 3 from 2009 to 2011. Wembanyama winning 5 to 6 straight would also put him as the player with the most DPOY awards, putting him ahead of Ben Wallace, Dikembe Mutombo, and Rudy Gobert, who each have 4.
While it will be a tall task for Wembanyama to achieve this feat, with his ability to command the defense, it’s very possible.
