Kansas basketball rumors: Jayhawks in driver’s seat for Tennessee transfer

The Kansas basketball team looks to regroup after a tough end to the 2025-26 season. Kansas lost in the Round of 32 of the NCAA tournament to St. John’s. The Jayhawks are looking in the transfer portal to get better.

Kansas is in position to pick up Tennessee transfer forward JP Estrella, On3 is reporting. The Jayhawks have competition though for the forward’s services.

“Kansas and Indiana have been tied to the Tennessee transfer. Sources have indicated to On3 at this point that the Jayhawks sit in a better spot, but that could change quickly if Indiana shifts its focus and attention over to Estrella,” the outlet reported.

Estrella averaged 10 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this past season. He helped the Volunteers reach the Elite Eight yet again under head coach Rick Barnes.

Kansas is looking for help after big man Flory Bidunga entered the transfer portal. Bidunga was a highly-touted player for the Jayhawks the last few seasons.

Kansas also lost forward Bryson Tiller to the portal in recent days. If Tiller and Bidunga don’t return, that leaves Kansas with a huge hole in the front court heading into the 2026-27 season.

“Starting in the front court next to Bidunga, Tiller averaged 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1 assist in 25.8 minutes per game. He scored in double figures 13 times with two double-doubles. While Bidunga was featured on the interior, Tiller provides more floor-stretching ability and isn’t anywhere near as physical,” On3 reported.

The Jayhawks are led by legendary head coach Bill Self. Self, who has battled medical issues over the past few seasons, announced after the St. John’s loss that he will return to Kansas for the 2026-27 season.

“I look forward to seeing and hearing the best fans in college basketball next season at Allen Fieldhouse,” Self said, per ESPN.

Kansas basketball fans hope that Self can lead the team to another national championship in 2027.
