Jets rumors: $1 million sent Nick Folk to Falcons this offseason, per insider

After the New York Jets lost kicker Nick Folk to the Atlanta Falcons this offseason, the team has been looking to replace the 41-year-old, but the contract talks between the Jets and Atlanta were closer than one might have imagined. As rumors surround the Jets in the offseason, this insider goes into the numbers on how much the Falcons offered more than New York.

Appearing on the “Jets Collective” show, team insider Rich Cimini would say that besides New York not wanting to go overboard with the price because of Folk’s age, the team was off by around a $1 million. 

“I think age had a lot to do with it, and Atlanta offered him, I think, four or four and a half million guaranteed, and the Jets were not going to come close to that,” Cimini said. “I think they, you know, they might have been a million off.”

Nick Folk picking between the Jets and the Falcons

Continuing to talk about the Jets and being unable to retain Folk, Cimini would understand the Falcons being a better destination for a kicker than New York. Cimini would mention Atlanta playing in an indoor stadium, how the rest of the NFC South division is in hotter climates, and more.

Cimini would also mention that if he were the Jets, he would have thrown in the extra million needed to beat the Falcons’ offer, as Folk got a two-year, $9 million contract.

“So, if you’re Nick Folk, and you know that land is offering you a million dollars more guaranteed, you get a chance to kick indoors in a division where, you know, you’re going to be kicking indoors in New Orleans, and you get some, you know, Carolina and Tampa, warm weather places, so more conducive for kicking. So I get it from Folks’ perspective. If we’re me, I would’ve thrown in the extra million just to keep them,” Cimini said.

New York has brought in Younghoe Koo and Cade York to be the replacement kicker, as Folk hit 96.6 percent of his field goals and 100 percent of his extra-point kicks last season.
