Ex-Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi attacked in enormous Champions League brawl

Matteo Guendouzi was at the centre of a chaotic post-match brawl following Fenerbahce’s win over Lyon.

The Turkish side booked their place in the league phase of the Champions League after they beat Lyon 2-1 in the second leg of their play-off tie.

But it wasn’t until after the full-time whistle that the drama properly kicked off.

What did Matteo Guendouzi do to start the post-match chaos?

Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon’s bitter rivals Marseille, gleefully goaded supporters by celebrating wildly on the pitch.

The midfielder went right up against the advertising barriers to poke fun at Lyon’s fans and seemingly flipped the bird in their direction before he was ushered away by his teammates.

Guendouzi still wasn’t done with his antics, as he decided to prance around the pitch.

But the act only served to rile up Lyon’s players, as they raced over to give Guendouzi a piece of their mind.

More players from both teams, along with some team officials, then got involved.

Eventually all parties were separated, but Guendouzi had more taunting to do.

As he made his way off the pitch, the midfielder continued to wind up Lyon fans and was captured shouting, ‘Allez l’OM,’ referencing Marseille.

But just before he went back through the tunnel, an individual in Lyon kit attempted to fly-kick the midfielder, sparking yet another brawl.

Ultimately it was Guendouzi and Fenerbahce who had the last laugh, as their win sealed their return to the Champions League after nearly two decades away.

The 2-1 win on the night helped Fenerbahce win the tie 3-2 on aggregate following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Goals from Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown did the business for the Turkish giants, as Malick Fofana’s second-half strike ultimately proved to be nothing more than a consolation for Lyon.

What did Matteo Guendouzi say about the post-match brawl?

Guendouzi later clarified his actions when speaking to reporters, stating: “If we can’t celebrate the way we want afterward, I find that disappointing.”

The midfielder added he believed he’d been ‘disrespected’ by Lyon supporters over ‘insults’ regarding his family.

Fenerbahce boss Ismail Kartal also discussed the post-match chaos, claiming the way Guendouzi was defended by his peers showed what ‘teamwork is all about.’

“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi,” Kartal said.

“Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about.”

Fenerbahce will now wait to learn who they will face in the Champions League, with the draw to take place on Thursday.
