Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer reveals 1 Caleb Downs trait that flies under the radar

Dallas Cowboys safety Caleb Downs has a big opportunity to turn heads in his rookie season, as he looks to prove that he can be a difference-maker at the next level after a standout career at Ohio State.

Downs has the pedigree to command attention, and his maiden stint will offer an early glimpse of his versatility and athleticism, two attributes that made him an easy pick for the Cowboys at No. 11 in the NFL Draft in April.

He is expected to start, as he made a strong impression in training camp. Dallas Morning News’ Joseph Hoyt said they asked Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer about Downs being “more physical inside the box than expected,” which has largely gone unnoticed. In response, Schottenheimer underscored an underrated facet about the 21-year-old newcomer.

“He’s a very powerful player. Great lower-body strength,” said Schottenheimer.

Last year at Ohio State, Downs recorded 68 total tackles, including five tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, two passes defended, and two forced fumbles. He received the Lott Trophy and the Jim Thorpe Award.

Schottenheimer has touted Downs’ all-around acumen. While he will commit early mistakes, the two-time Unanimous All-American will only get better as he progresses, especially by learning from defensive end Quinnen Williams, linebacker Demarvion Overshown, safety Malik Hooker, and cornerback DaRon Bland, among others on the defensive unit.

It is unclear if Schottenheimer will use Downs in their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints on Friday. He sat out against the Arizona Cardinals and played only one possession against the Seattle Seahawks.
