Jerry Jones makes decision on selling stake in $13bn Dallas Cowboys amid Mark Cuban interest
Jerry Jones has moved to clarify previous comments in which he suggested he wouldn’t ‘rule out’ selling a stake in the Dallas Cowboys.
Jones, 83, has owned America’s Team since 1989, and has turned them into the most valuable sporting franchise in the world.

The Cowboys are now worth $13 billion, having been sold for just $140 million by Bum Bright nearly four decades ago.
Despite years of mediocrity for a team that won the Super Bowl three times in the 1990s, the Cowboys remain one of the most popular institutions in sports and there would be no shortage of potential suitors, should Jones wish to sell off a percentage.
NFL owners voted in August 2024 to allow private equity funds to buy small stakes in teams, with the likes of the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots all completing sales between three to 10 percent last year.
Jones appeared to suggest earlier this month that he was open to someone like Mark Cuban, former principal owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, buying a stake in the Cowboys through Harbinger Sports Partners.

Jerry Jones clarifies comments about selling off stake in Cowboys
“No, I don’t have that on my plate as a possibility at this time,” Jones said, when asked by a reporter if Cuban’s interest had advanced.
“But the question really was, ‘Should I ever look at it?’
“Well, (Cuban) is the kind of individual that I would want to have as a part of a group. In his particular case, because of the experience he’s got and just plain because I know Mark and I really like his human qualities.
“He’s very smart, he’s very strong and he’s very passionate with people. He’s a people person.
“So candidly, when they brought his name up, I said, ‘Well, that’s the kind of individual if you’re going to go outside our family.’ But I don’t have any plans for that.”

Mark Cuban’s Harbinger fund ‘open’ to Cowboys deal
For now, Jones will continue operating the Cowboys as a family business.
Son Stephen acts as chief operating officer, daughter Charlotte as chief brand officer, and Jerry Jr. as chief sales and marketing officer.
“All three of his children are co-owners in the franchise.
But at 83-years-old, it will soon be time for Jones to think seriously about his future.
Cuban’s Harbinger fund has recently expanded their sporting portfolio with an investment in the Las Vegas-bound Athletics baseball team, and one day turn to the NFL.
“I’m sure our Harbinger fund would be open to it,” Cuban told The Dallas Morning News earlier this month, on the possibility of buying an interest in the Cowboys.

As of now, Jones appears happy to keep the Cowboys in the family. But should he decide to open the door to a minority investor, the team already has a leading candidate in Cuban.
