Jaylon Johnson sends loud minicamp reminder of dominant potential
The Chicago Bears are ready to claw their way back to the playoffs in 2026. Chicago made some solid moves this offseason and should be in the hunt for the NFC North crown this fall. It would certainly help if one of their best defenders can play at an elite level this season.
Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson put on a show at Chicago’s first mandatory minicamp practice of the offseason. Johnson made multiple plays that should remind fans about his elite potential when healthy.
“Cornerback Jaylon Johnson came away with two interceptions, including one during the two-minute drill, and registered a pass breakup while defending wide receiver Luther Burden III,” ESPN’s Courtney Cronin wrote. “Johnson said it would take an entire offseason to feel back to normal after having surgery on his core muscle in September, before returning in Week 13, but appears to be progressing well.”
Johnson dealt with several injuries during the past year. He suffered a hip injury during the offseason that prevented him from participating in training camp. Then Johnson suffered a groin injury in Week 2, landing him on injured reserve.
The fear was Johnson would miss the entire 2025 season. Fortunately, he was able to return and play in the final six games of the regular season.
But aside from Johnson, Chicago got a mixed back of injury updates at other positions at the start of minicamp.
EDGE Dayo Odeyingbo and LB T.J. Edwards did get reps during team periods of mandatory minicamp. It was the first time either player hit the practice field so far this spring. But CB Tyrique Stevenson and LB D’Marco Jackson both left practice early with injuries, and DB Kyler Gordon is still sidelined with a soft tissue injury of his own.
Ultimately, it is too early in the offseason to get too panicked about injuries. But it is encouraging to see a key contributor like Johnson looking like his old self once again.
