‘It sucks’ – Lee Corso admits he can’t watch College GameDay as ESPN announce major change to show

College football without Lee Corso takes some getting used to.

The beloved ESPN host called time on a legendary career in April having appeared on the network since 1987.

Thanks to appearing on College GameDay since it was first aired, Corso became synonymous with the show.

His headgear picks were iconic and a 287-114 record proved an impressive knowledge of amateur football.

But what does somebody who dedicated decades of their life to a job do when it’s all over?

Corso is trying to figure that out.

The 90-year-old spoke with WESH and admitted that he can’t get used to not flying to schools all over the country every Saturday.

“It sucks,” he declared.

Many would be tempted to check in on their former colleagues.

But Corso can’t bring himself to look in on old friends Kirk Herbstreit and Nick Saban.

“It’s lousy. I hate it,” he added. “I can’t watch College GameDay. I can’t get used to it. I’m not working anymore. I used to fly all over.”

Corso could decide to make a guest appearance one day — he would be mote than welcome.

“The one thing I think Lee Corso did — and he did it with such grace — is he brought entertainment to this business,” Saban said via On3 in April. “We used to just watch games, and people would call the game.

“But he made it entertaining, which is what you do and what we all have an opportunity to do for the fans. He made it better for the fans. It was more enjoyable.

“He’s got a great personality. What he did for the entertainment side of this business, to me, is his greatest contribution to college sports. I don’t think people fully realize the value of that.”

The show must go on, and ESPN is trying to bring ESPN into the modern age.

In response to a recent dispute between Disney and YouTube TV that led to a broadcasting blackout, the network put out the show for free on social media.

The row has now been resolved, but fans will be able to enjoy the show without paying for the rest of the season.

ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro was desperate yo avoid short-changing fans.

“[College GameDay] is a unifier. This show should be seen by people. Because we have a business disagreement. We should make it as easy as possible,” he added. “It was on the ESPN app in front of the paywall. It was on X…

“I’m happy as hell that we got the opportunity to do that. I’m very lucky to be a part of a show that obviously draws so much interest.”
