Every new manager dreams of a positive start to life at a new club. Andoni Iroala would have been no different.

Instead, the Liverpool boss is still awaiting his first win in his new job heading into matchday three of the Premier League campaign.

The Reds salvaged a point against Newcastle United on the opening weekend, requiring a last-gasp penalty to draw 2-2 at St James’ Park.

The scoreline was the same when Nottingham Forest visited Anfield last time out. For the second match running, Liverpool had to twice come from behind to avoid defeat.

To put a positive spin on things, Iraola’s team have shown admirable spirit to repeatedly cancel out deficits in back-to-back games.

Yet it is clear that Liverpool have a huge amount of work to do if they are to have a successful season.

The Reds have been far too open so far. That was a weakness under Arne Slot last term, and for now Liverpool remain too easy to play against.

Ipswich Town will look to capitalise on that shortcoming on Friday, as they aim to bounce back from a 5-2 loss to Manchester United. 

The pressure is all on Liverpool, who will be desperate to pick up their first victory of 2026/27 as quickly as possible.

Liverpool fans will draw belief from the fact that it took Bournemouth a while to get going following Andoni Iraola’s arrival at the Vitality Stadium.

For the time being, though, it looks like Liverpool will have to accept a certain degree of defensive vulnerability.

Outgunning their opponents is the only way for the Reds to get points on the board in the short term. So while Ipswich Town will have some joy here, Liverpool will bank on their superior attacking talent making the difference.

We anticipate goals at both ends at Portman Road, with Liverpool ultimately edging it.

Ipswich Town had their moments against Manchester United on matchday two, but in the end they could not live with some of the Red Devils’ attacking play.

Gary O’Neil will have been pleased with the threat his own team carried, though. Ipswich scored twice and could have had one or two more goals.

Given where Liverpool are at right now, this looks set to be a similar encounter. Goals are on the cards in the first fixture of the Premier League weekend.

Bradley Barcola is now a Liverpool player and we are likely to see him in some capacity on Friday.

Going forward, Andoni Iraola may opt for a front four of Barcola, Florian Wirtz, Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak – in other words, a quartet composed entirely of players signed in the last 15 months.

It is a new-look Liverpool attack and, given it cost over £380m to assemble, it must get results.

In the immediate future, Isak is the likeliest goal-getter against Ipswich Town this weekend.
