Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz blasts NCAA ruling on Cade McNamara tampering violation

Iowa’s 2026 offseason got substantially more difficult when the NCAA hit the Hawkeyes with a one-year probation for tampering during their recruitment of quarterback Cade McNamara. Needless to say, head coach Kirk Ferentz is not pleased with the development.

While seemingly admitting his wrongdoing, Ferentz went off on the NCAA for what he deemed an “overly harsh” punishment. The longtime head coach said he wishes the officials “considered the facts” of what happened in 2023 after investigating the case for over two years.

“Two-plus years to investigate this is an interesting process, to say the least,” Ferentz said on Sirius XM Radio. “Obviously disappointed. Strongly feel that it was overly harsh; it was an overreach, I believe. There were a lot of details involved. I think, especially taking two-plus years, you’d consider the facts. I think what we offered up a year and a half ago was more than ample.

“It is what it is. They made the decision [and] we’ll live with it. It’s just illustrative of some of the challenges that face us in college football, and I would suggest maybe the lack of really thinking through things and really consider circumstances. To me, there’s a big difference between impermissible contact and tampering. The facts of this whole story kind of convey that. It’s just the world we live in. We’ll accept [the punishments] and move forward.”

In addition to the probation, Iowa also forfeits four of its six wins from the 2023 season and was fined $25,000. Ferentz will also be suspended for one game in 2026, in addition to wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr.

Iowa added McNamara in the 2022-2023 college football transfer portal after he spent his first three seasons with Michigan. The move ended up being a bust for both sides, with McNamara going just 9-4 in 13 games with the Hawkeyes over two years.
