Hurricanes’ Jaccob Slavin tips cap to K’Andre Miller for game-saving play vs Flyers

The Carolina Hurricanes just keep winning in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The defense has been stellar as the Hurricanes are undefeated in the playoffs so far. In the process, the Hurricanes have allowed five goals in five games, including a 3-0 shutout of the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of the series.

While Frederik Andersen has been amazing, with a .961 save percentage, it helps when the defense in front of the netminder is also at the top of its game. K’Andre Miller was at his best in Game 1, and fellow blueliner Jaccob Slavin is giving him props for a play in the first game of the series, per Sean Gentille of The Athletic.

“Obviously, I appreciate a good stick, so watching that, I like that a lot,” Slavin said. “It happens all the time throughout the game, not just in that play. It happens all of the time where a forward thinks they’re around him, and then his stick comes out, pokes around and takes it and goes the other way. You watch that night in and night out and it’s unbelievable, I think (he’s) one of the best in the league.”

The play came mid-way through the second period, with the Hurricanes up 2-0, and momentum hanging in the balance. Carolian was on the man-advantage, but as the powerplay expired, Garnet Hathaway broke out from the box and was open for a pass. He appeared to have a breakaway on Andersen, until Miller caught him from behind, poking the puck away, and also avoiding a penalty of his own. The Hurricanes would score later in the period, putting a stranglehold on the game.

“He’s so effortless in his stride and just powerful,” Slavin said.

Miller is in his first season with the Hurricanes. He spent his first five seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers before Miller was traded to the Canes ahead of this season. He has also made an impact on the offensive side of the ice in the playoffs. Miller leads all Hurricanes blueliners in points with three, all assists.

The Hurricanes look to take a 2-0 series lead over the Flyers on Monday night.
