While his play on the court drew attention, Walker stepped up as a leader both off the court and in the locker room. In a recent conversation on the FansView app, he spoke about stepping into a leadership role for the young, emerging Hawks squad this season, after seeing success with the Timberwolves in seasons past.
“It’s a learning curve for me now being like one of the lead guys in a role to, to bring the team together. But the, I, I think the main thing that I’ve kind of learned is how to settle in, how to relax. Being in…so heavily in a scouting report for a playoff series is also something I’m not used to. So for me, with experience and inexperience to a certain degree, I think the main thing that I can just do best is like tag along with CJ.
He added, “I think the main lesson I’ve learned personally in trying to help with my leadership is if you don’t know or you’re not really previewed in a certain situations, it’s not okay to… I mean, it’s not wrong to look to somebody else. To talk it through, to work it through. And as I’m working it through, CJ’s been big for us, and I just kind of help us stay locked in on the details, getting stops, small things that when they make runs, like, what is our response gonna be?”
Walker finished the season averaging 20.8 points, 3.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals.
