How Mets still screwed up with Carlos Mendoza ‘mistranslation’ despite win over Twins
The New York Mets finally broke their long losing streak after 12 losses in a row. Now, the Mets officially have a winning streak, winning a second straight game over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night.
While the Mets went on to win, they did everything in their power to attempt to blow the game, including a translation error heading into the ninth inning by Carlos Mendoza, per ESPN.
“Mistranslation there,” Mendoza said after his team hung to beat Minnesota 10-8. “The messaging there was if it’s tied, you’re going to go back out. We take the lead, Devin’s in the game. The thing that got stuck to him was ‘I’m going back out.’ I speak Spanish. So I need to go and tell him to make sure he gets the message there.”
The Mets led the game going into the eighth inning. Craig Kimbrel loaded the bases, leading to Huascar Brazoban entering the game to face Ryan Jeffers with the bases loaded and the Mets leading the game 7-3. Jeffers took the second pitch to left field for a grand slam. Brazoban was able to get the last out of the inning, but the damage was done.
Still, the Mets loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, and Bo Bichette drove home three runs. This led to a save situation, and Devin Williams was expected to head into the game. When the top of the ninth began, Brazoban trotted back out to the mound as Williams tried to enter from the bullpen. Since Brazoban crossed the foul line, he had to stay in the game temporarily.
“The lights are going off, and I was like ‘Wow,'” Brazobán said through interpreter Alan Suriel “So that’s when I realized. I was frustrated with myself for the prior inning,” Brazobán said. “They told me clearly if the game was tied, I’d go out. But if they took the lead, Devin would come in. But I kind of stayed on autopilot. Honestly, it was really my bad.”
William would ultimately get into the game, and while a run scored, the Mets held on to win the game 10-8. The Mets will look to make it three straight wins on Friday night, hosting the Colorado Rockies.
