How Fever-Wings game made history the WNBA has never seen before
Caitlin Clark’s return to regular-season action ended in a narrow loss as the Dallas Wings defeated the Indiana Fever 107-104 in a topsy-turvy season opener. Indiana had two opportunities to tie the game in the closing seconds, first on Clark’s deep 32-footer and then on an even deeper attempt by Kelsey Mitchell with less than a second remaining, but both missed as Dallas escaped Gainbridge Fieldhouse with the road win.
However, the game still ended up making a remarkable piece of history, becoming the first-ever WNBA season-opener with both teams scoring more than 100 points, per a post on X by NBC Sports’ Khristina Williams. Clark finished with 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds in her first regular-season game since July 2025.
She scored 10 points in the third quarter, helping Indiana erase a nine-point halftime deficit, and also became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 career points, 250 rebounds and 250 assists. Arike Ogunbowale led Dallas with 22 points, while Paige Bueckers and Odyssey Sims each added 20.
Jessica Shepard nearly finished with a triple-double, recording 13 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. The Wings shot 59.1% from the field and 12-for-23 from 3-point range.
Clark notably struggled from distance, shooting 2-for-9 from 3-point range. She also briefly left the floor twice during the second half to receive treatment on her back before returning to finish the game.
Kelsey Mitchell carried Indiana offensively late in the game and finished with a game-high 30 points. Eleven of those came in the fourth quarter as Indiana repeatedly trimmed the deficit.
Aliyah Boston added 23 points, which means that the likes of Boston, Clark and Mitchell combined for 73 of Indiana’s 104 points. Neither team led by more than nine points for most of the night, and the momentum shifted repeatedly.
The Fever will now take on the Los Angeles Sparks, while the Wings have their second matchup against the Atlanta Dream.
