How Braves will honor Bobby Cox for rest of 2026 season

The Atlanta Braves announced Tuesday that players will wear a No. 6 patch on the back of their caps for the remainder of the 2026 season in honor of Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox, one of the most influential and revered figures in MLB history.

The tribute to the Braves’ legendary manager comes only days after Cox passed away Saturday at the age of 84 in Marietta, Georgia. Widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in baseball history and the ultimate “player’s manager,” Cox helped build one of the sport’s defining dynasties during his remarkable tenure in Atlanta while earning immense respect throughout MLB for his leadership, consistency, and loyalty to the Braves.

Cox guided the Braves to 14 consecutive division titles and the franchise’s 1995 World Series championship during one of baseball’s most dominant eras. He finished his managerial career with 2,504 victories, the fourth-most by any manager in Major League history. Atlanta retired his iconic No. 6 jersey in 2011, cementing his status as one of the most respected and beloved figures the organization—and the sport—has ever seen.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop shared details of the organization’s plans Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, as the Braves prepared to honor Cox before their home game vs. the Chicago Cubs at Truist Park.

According to additional reporting from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Braves chairman Terry McGuirk personally presented the commemorative caps to manager Walt Weiss and players before Tuesday’s opener of a three-game series with the Cubs. The gesture added another emotional moment to a difficult period for the organization and its fan base.

The No. 6 tribute will remain on every regular-season cap and continue throughout any postseason games the team reaches this year. As a result, players will carry a constant reminder of Cox’s impact each time they take the field during the remainder of the 2026 MLB season.
