How 49ers shocked Dee Winters with draft trade to Cowboys
The NFL Draft was filled with excitement, and the Dallas Cowboys made a big deal when they traded a draft pick for Dee Winters. Now, Winters is discussing it and explaining how it shocked him, according to Cowboys beat writer Jon Machota.
“New Cowboys LB Dee Winters on getting traded from the 40ers during the draft last weekend: ‘Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was surprised quite a bit. Everything happens for a reason. I’m excited to be back home, and I get to play for the Dallas Cowboys,'” Machiota wrote on X.
Winters could become an impact player for the Cowboys as he returns to Texas, the place where he grew up. He has played for the San Francisco 49ers for the last three seasons after they drafted him in the sixth round. Last season, he had 67 solo tackles and one interception.
Many fans soured on the Niners’ decision to trade Winters to the Cowboys. Regardless, he will play in front of his home state. There is still things to learn, and he is not sure where he will fit in.
“I’m not really familiar with the scheme yet, but from what I’m learning right now, it looks like I’m going to be in a lot of space, and I’m excited about that. The way that I move in open space, and when I don’t have to deal with some o-linemen, football is way more way that way. The scheme fits perfectly for me,” Winters told Machiota.
Winters will get a chance to play his former team, as the Cowboys will face the 49ers this season. When that happens, it will likely be revealed in a few weeks when the schedule is released.
