Historic MLB team reveal $10m ‘outlier’ project 1,500 miles away to gain ‘huge competitive advantage’

The New York Mets continue to strive to become one of the best franchises in MLB.

On Thursday morning, high-ranking Mets executives gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

They cut the ribbon, officially opening a brand new $10 million facility for the youngest players in their organization, 16-18 year olds who dream of making it to the major leagues.

The centerpiece of the new complex is a 10,000-square-foot weight room and nutrition bar.

It also includes a 16,900-square-foot turf agility field, an expanded training room, featuring hot and cold plunge pools, an open-air batting cage and a remodeled clubhouse.

“A lot of them have minimal exposure to the type of training envisionment that we’re going to be putting them in,” director of player development Andrew Christie said, via MLB’s Anthony DiComo.

“Having the best possible equipment, the most possible space, the greatest number of options to make them more physically gifted I think is a huge, huge competitive advantage.”

The Mets train up to 70 to 120 athletes, mostly from the Dominican Republic, depending on the time of the year.

The project was green-lit by owners Steve and Alex Cohen, who are already spending $60 million on upgrading their Florida complex.

“It’s another instance of Steve and Alex going above and beyond the rest of the league. They have continued to do that since they bought the team,” Christie continued.

In addition to developing players who are currently in the organization, the new facility will be used as a recruiting tool.

Signing bonuses for international amateurs tend to be a big factor, a cutting-edge facility will do nothing but help the Mets get the cream of the crop.

It is also expected to serve current professionals during the offseason, reinforcing the Dominican Republic’s role as a key hub for baseball talent and innovation.

Mets missing one of their own Dominican stars as losing streak reaches nine

Back in New York, the Mets appear to be in a downward spiral.

They have lost nine straight MLB games with the main reason being the lack of offense.

Their own Dominican superstar Juan Soto, who was signed for a record-setting $765 million, was placed on the injured list on April, 7.

With no Soto in the lineup, the Mets offense has struggled, posting a team-wide .483 OPS in the last seven days, which ranks last in baseball.

They have managed just one home run, and seven RBI’s, and on three separate occasions, have gone 17 innings without scoring a run.

Soto holds the key, and the Mets will be hoping he can make his targeted return date, which is scheduled to be early next week.
