Giants rumors: The ‘ideal’ draft outcome with 3 players on radar at No. 5

With the New York Giants hiring John Harbaugh as their next head coach, the identity of their franchise is sure to change. Whoever the Giants select with their fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft will help dictate how the organization will be re-built.

That is of course, unless New York decides to trade back. With the franchise weak on draft capital, a move down the board, assuming they can still land a top flight prospect, is in the team’s best interest, via Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

“In an ideal world, the Giants would like to move back a few spots, add more picks (they have just two in the top 100) and draft a player like Ohio State safety Caleb Downs,” Raanan said. “But that’s easier said than done.”

If the Giants are to remain at No. 5, their targets are becoming clearer. With a pick so high, New York knows they need to leave the draft with a truly impactful player. They believe running back Jeremiyah Love, linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs fit the bill.

“Staying at No. 5, the three players who seem to be most squarely on their radar are Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles and Downs,” he continued. “Coach John Harbaugh and the Giants are especially high on Love. If he’s available, it’s hard to see them passing up that opportunity. Guard, defensive tackle or cornerback are likely targets on Day 2.”

With Love, the Giants would have a fearsome backfield between him and Cam Skattebo. Defensively, either Styles or Downs would become a focal point early on their careers.

Overall, Harbaugh and company are trying to fill their roster with as much talent as possible. They are fully aware of how valuable picking in the top five is.
