Giants’ Harrison Bader among players to land on IL before Reds game
The San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds are a few hours away from Game 2 of a 3-game series in Cincinnati. Ahead of the game, the Giants announced two injury transactions, highlighted by Harrison Bader being added to the Injured List.
- OF Jared Oliva placed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist hamate fracture.
- OF Harrison Bader placed on the 10-day injured list (retro to April 12) with a left hamstring strain.
- OF Will Brennan (#7) recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
- OF Drew Gilbert (#0) recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
It’s not every day you see a team make four transactions involving four outfielders. The outfield is going to look very different for the Giants for the next two weeks.
Bader has been the starting center fielder all season. All of his at-bats have come from him playing center, outside of one pinch-hitting opportunity. He has struggled at the plate big time, with only a .115 average, one home run, and three RBIs in 51 plate appearances. His OPS is a stunning .338 with only one double on the season. A stint on the IL can be a good thing for the Giants as they try to utilize a different bat out there.
Jared Oliva only has seven at-bats this season, resulting in one hit and one run scored. He has not seen much playing time.
Will Brennan and Drew Gilbert hope to produce at a much higher pace while on the roster. One of them will get a ton of at-bats and even playing time if the Giants want to keep Jung Hoo Lee in right field. However, moving back to centerfield makes sense for Lee.
Over the weekend, Luis Arraez left a game with an injury. The hope is that this does not become a theme for the Giants.
