Georgia football’s Kirby Smart reveals his biggest concern for college football

The Georgia football program is currently gearing up for the 2026 college football season, which is just over three months away. The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back after a second straight loss in the Sugar Bowl, this time to the Ole Miss Rebels.

Recently, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart revealed his thoughts on the ongoing debate regarding the college football playoff and whether it should be expanded once again, from 12 teams to 24.

“What’s your main purpose? I do agree with Commissioner Sankey, we’re not a tournament sport,” said Smart, per Pete Thamel of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.

He also spoke on what he views as the biggest issue in the college football landscape today.

“My biggest concern for our sport is we’re going to ruin all the other sports,” he said, referring to non-revenue sports. “We’re going to lose that if we keep spending.”

Smart is not the first person to float the idea that football programs’ overspending could wipe out the ability of schools’ other sports programs from having the necessary resources to stay above water, but it remains to be seen if any meaningful change or limit will be implemented in this regard.

Meanwhile, Smart’s Bulldogs have come up short in three straight years after winning two straight national championships in 2021 and 2022. The last two seasons, the Bulldogs have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs, only to then lose their first game when they got there as a favorite, this past year against Ole Miss.

Georgia is expected to once again be among the top teams in the country this upcoming season, which is slated to begin in early September.
