Francisco Alvarez knee injury update strikes another blow during Mets’ awful season

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez suffered a knee injury during the club’s 10-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. With the club scheduled to take on the Tigers again on Wednesday, a new update reveals exactly what kind of injury Alvarez is dealing with.

Reports indicate that Alvarez, who is 24 years old, suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Mets officially placed him on the 10-day IL for the time being.

“Meanwhile, across town in Queens, the Mets announce that catcher Francisco Alvarez has a meniscus tear in his right knee and is going on the IL,” reported Nightengale.

The severity of the tear isn’t yet known, but depending on how severe the tear is will determine Alvarez’s timeline for recovery. If it is mild, it could take four to eight weeks for the five-year veteran to return. However, if it is more serious, then the recovery time jumps up to three to six months.

With Francisco Alvarez set to miss an extended period of time, the Mets are likely to rely on Luis Torrens to fill in at catcher. The franchise may have to call someone up from the minor leagues to serve as a backup option behind Torrens.

While the Mets are having a dreadful year, it wasn’t the worst season for Alvarez. Though 112 at-bats in the 2026 campaign so far, Alvarez owns a .241 batting average and .317 OBP while recording 27 hits, four home runs, and 10 RBIs. He’s been solid defensively too, totaling just two errors and owning a 99.3% fielding percentage.
