Tournament favourites France get their 2026 World Cup campaign underway tonight with a fascinating clash against a highly fancied Senegal team.

Didier Deschamps’ side have reached the last two World Cup finals, beating Croatia in Moscow back in 2018 before narrowly missing out on penalties against Argentina in Qatar four years ago.

Kylian Mbappe, last World Cup’s Golden Boot winner, having become just the second player in history to score a hat trick in the final, will still be leading the line this time around, with the captain’s armband, as he chases Miroslav Klose’s record for most goals in World Cups, currently just four behind.

The Real Madrid striker bagged 48 goals for club and country last season, while compatriot Michael Olise contributed 53 goals and assists into Bayern Munich’s domestic treble winning campaign, as well as a further seven in a France shirt.

France have won five of their last six matches in all competitions and have lost only once in their last 12, their most recent of which was a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Lille in their final match before jetting off to North America in the hunt for a third star above their badge.

Senegal will head into their opening World Cup clash as heavy underdogs for victory as they take on the tournament favourites and the side who have reached the final of each of the last two editions of the tournament.

The African side could only manage a draw and a defeat in their last two World Cup warm up friendlies, losing 3-2 to the USA before being held to a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in their most recent clash in San Antonio.

Moussa Niakhate can be expected to have a busy night in the heart of the Senegalese defence tonight, with France expected to dominate for the large majority of the match.
