Four new Premier League managers tipped to be sacked this season

Half of the Premier League’s eight new managers could lose their jobs before the end of the season.

That’s the view of talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino, discussing the record number of changes in the dugout.

Nine of the 20 top-flight teams will begin the 2026/27 campaign with a different manager from the one who ended last term in charge.

Eight clubs have already moved to appoint new bosses, with Newcastle searching for Eddie Howe‘s successor after he stepped down on Friday.

The previous record for coaching changes between the end of one Premier League season and the start of the next campaign was seven in 2016/17.

And Cascarino feels that with the managerial merry-go-round turning at full speed, chances are not all eight new starters will still be in charge come next summer.

“Now, out of that eight, you probably could say it’s very likely that half of them will be gone by the end of the season,” the former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland striker told Shebahn Aherne on the talkSPORT Weekend Sports Breakfast.

Asked if he really thought that, Cascarino continued: “Well, if you just look at the numbers game… yeah, it’s very likely that out of them eight managers, four of them could be gone.”

As such, he expects there to be opportunities for Howe to return to Premier League management sooner rather than later.

“Yeah, he’ll get offered jobs without a doubt,” Cascarino said.

“How long he takes off, we don’t know that…I’m sure he’ll want to get back into football.

“He’s still, like you said, what, 48 he is – so he’s still a very young man in many ways as a manager.

“And Eddie did a great job [at Newcastle], and I think if opportunities – like they always do – come up, Eddie…I guarantee he’ll be the bookmakers’ favourite about five times if he doesn’t take a job by Christmas, because there’ll be four or five managers that probably go by then.”

However, talkSPORT understands Howe is in no rush to get back into management.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are expected to name Matthias Jaissle as Howe’s successor.

The German is currently head coach of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, having previously led Red Bull Salzburg to two Austrian Bundesliga titles.

The managerial merry-go-round never stops turning

There were a whopping 11 managerial changes in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season, with Nottingham Forest sacking both Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche.

Arsenal‘s Mikel Arteta is still the league’s longest-serving boss and one of only three who have been in post longer than three years, along with Aston Villa‘s Unai Emery and Leeds‘ Daniel Farke.

The new Premier League campaign gets underway with Arteta’s title-winning Gunners hosting newly promoted Coventry on Friday August 21.

There are five rounds of fixtures between then and the first international break at the end of September.
