Footballer suffers horror injury as ankle ‘left hanging on by sock’ as teammates in tears and medics rush onto pitch
A horrific injury during a match in Honduras on Tuesday night left a player’s teammates in tears on the pitch.
The incident occurred during a top-flight match between Olancho and Motagua.
Brazilian winger Romario Luiz da Silva suffered a gruesome ankle injury whilst preventing to stop an Olancho counter-attack.
Horror injury
The Motagua forward had chased down the ball after his side had seen a corner cleared before coming under pressure from an opponent.
As the pair challenged for the ball, though, Romario landed awkwardly on his ankle.
He was immediately left in agony on the floor as he waved his arm in the air.
Meanwhile, his teammates were visibly distraught as they signalled for the referee to stop play.
A Motagua player dropped to his knee with his head in his hands, others could be seen crying as they watched on.
Medics immediately ran onto the pitch to treat Romario’s ankle injury.
After more than three minutes, the 36-year-old was stretchered off the field.
Replays of the challenge which caused the injury showed the severity of the fall.
Romario’s foot was left pointing in the opposite direction as he laid on the floor immediately after being tackled.
Reports in Honduras have described the injury by saying his ankle was left ‘hanging on by his sock’.
Motagua had been leading 2-0 in the Liga Nacional match at the time of the incident.
The 19-time champions held on to secure a crucial away victory on the night.
However, the result has been marred by the severity of the injury suffered by Romario.
It comes just four months after the veteran forward joined Motagua on a one-year deal in January.
Romario has since scored three goals and added two assists in 21 appearances for the club.
His arrival in Honduras followed a nine-and-a-half-year spell in Guatemala after leaving his native Brazil in 2016.
During that time he won two Clausura titles with Santa Lucia and Antigua.
