Fan accused of racist message to Chelsea Gray fired by employer
A fan who sent a racist DM to Las Vegas Aces guard Chelsea Gray on social media has been fired by his employer. The social media user worked at Hilton Grand Vacations, and the hotel chain announced his firing in a statement obtained by ESPN on Tuesday evening.
“The person responsible for posting this information is no longer with the company,” Hilton Grand Vacations said in the statement. “His behavior was in violation of multiple company policies and does not reflect our company’s values in any way.”
The termination comes two days after the Las Vegas Aces lost 109 to 75 to Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. Following the game, Gray received a message in her Instagram DMs and shit the contents of the message on her story.
“People act like we just make this s— up,” Gray said in the post on her story. “And the audacity to tell us as athletes to ‘shut up and dribble.’
The moment caused several social media users to find the identity of the user and where they worked, and ultimately call his employer to notify them of his message. The incident comes only two weeks after Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas also received harassment following the team’s matchup against the Indiana Fever.
On June 30th, Thomas spoke out about the harassment that she received following the game and argued that what was occurring was bigger than basketball.
“We’re so concerned about the safety on the court, but time and time again, we’re having people threaten our lives. Leaking addresses out there. Putting crazy pictures that have nothing to do with basketball. It’s really unacceptable. It’s something that needs to change in this league, and I’m just really sick and tired of it.”
