Expect Kirk Ferentz’s Iowa offense to be as crappy as ever based on unresolved QB battle

Iowa football will be opening their season in a few days against Northern Illinois, but there are still some things they’re trying to sort out. One of those things happens to be the starting quarterback position, and head coach Kirk Ferentz still doesn’t know who he’ll ride with for the season.

As of now, Week 1 will most likely feature both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinksi, according to Pete Nakos of On3.

“Sources continue to tell On3 that no decision has been made at Iowa regarding the quarterback battle. Week 1 is being treated as a tryout of sorts, with Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski both expected to play. Who takes the field has yet to be determined, sources tell On3,” Nakos wrote.

Earlier in the week, Ferentz let it be known that it’s hard to figure out who the QB1 will be.

“I think we probably need more evidence, and the next step is to see how guys play in ball games,” Ferentz said via ESPN’s Jake Trotter. “We’ve been in that situation before, so we’ll let that play out as it goes. Hard to predict how it’s going to go. We’ll wait and see.”

Mark Gronowski was the starter for Iowa last season, and Brown and Hecklinski are looking to replace him.

“To really say one is this far in front of the other, it’s not fair at this point,” Ferentz said. “We’ll probably have more evidence after Saturday, but I think we probably want to keep an open mind, too, and let things play out. If it’s obvious, it’s obvious. If not, we’ll just keep riding with it.”

It’ll be interesting to see who steps up in Week 1, because that’ll most likely be the guy that Hecklinski leans on this year.
