Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani has been on a statistical tear since mid-May day off
The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to be an unfair ballclub for opponents to deal with, as they have been ever since they signed Shohei Ohtani back in 2023. They once again have a comfortable lead at the top of the NL West, with a 38-21 record heading into Monday night’s contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and it helps that Ohtani has been rather brilliant over the past few weeks.
Ohtani notably got the day off on the 14th of May after he pitched seven innings in a 4-0 shutout win for the Dodgers over division rival San Francisco Giants. Since then, he has clearly been rejuvenated. As per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, Ohtani has gone 24-60 from the plate since that rest day, and he has 10 extra-base hits (six doubles, one triple, and three home runs) and seven multi-hit games during that span.
The 31-year-old Japanese star has another extra-base hit to his tally on Monday night, as he currently has two hits in three at-bats against the Diamondbacks. He has been on a tear, and it’s clear that the day of rest did him a world of good.
Ohtani has suited up in every game for the Dodgers since, and it’s helped as well that LA as a team had two day offs over the past three weeks. Keeping him fresh is going to be very important for LA, especially as he continues to transition into becoming a full-time two-way player once more.
On the season, Ohtani is sporting an OPS of .894 prior to the Dodgers-Diamondbacks clash on Monday, and he currently has 10 home runs and 31 runs batted in.
He’s been unhittable in his nine starts on the mound; in 55 innings of work, the Dodgers star has recorded an ERA of 0.82, with the peripherals to back up his elite numbers.
