Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani clear front-runner for another MVP. What about Cy Young?
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been getting back on track over the last couple of weeks, currently sitting at 34-20 after a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday evening at home. Shohei Ohtani had a solid game in this one, recording a hit and an RBI in the victory, as well as getting on base with a walk.
Recently, MLB insider Bradford Doolittle of ESPN broke down his frontrunners for various league awards, and unsurprisingly, Ohtani came in at the top of his NL MVP prediction.
“Among NL hitters, Ohtani ranks in the top 10 to 12 in offense-only metrics such as runs created, offensive winning percentage and OPS+. That’s really good but not at MVP level. However, when you layer on the value of a pitcher with a 0.73 ERA over 49 innings, it’s a combination impossible to match,” wrote Doolittle.
He also projected Ohtani as being fourth in the NL’s Cy Young race, behind only Christopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies, Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Chase Burns of the Cincinnati Reds.
“While Ohtani has pitched like a full-time starter when he pitches, he hasn’t pitched as often as the NL’s other aces,” noted Doolittle.
It’s unclear just how much the availability, or lack thereof, will factor into the voting process regarding the Cy Young award for Ohtani. For the most part this season, the Dodgers have been layering his workload so that he is not hitting on the same days that he takes the mound.
Overall, Ohtani remains far and away the most talented and valuable player in the sport, considering his prowess both at the plate and on the mound, and he will hope to win his third straight World Series championship with the Dodgers in about five months.
