Dodgers’ Mookie Betts ends home run slump with 2-run smash vs. Rockies

Heading into the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Tuesday night showdown against the Colorado Rockies, no one needed a big offensive performance more than Mookie Betts.

After a solid enough start to the regular season, Betts’ April came to an end before it even really began, landing on IL with an oblique strain that kept him on the shelf from April 5 through May 11. Since his return, however, Betts has struggled to even buy a hit, which, considering his sheer financial wealth, is saying something.

On the season, Betts is only hitting .165/.230/.342 and has recorded just two home runs since his return on May 11, one against the San Francisco Giants, and another against the Los Angeles Angels… at least until Game 2 against the Rockies, when Betts bashed his first bomb in 10 days out of Dodger Field against Rockies left hander Kyle Freeland just 10 pitches into the contest.

Hitting out of the fourth hole after following Shohei Ohtani in his usual two-spot the game before, Betts raked a near-90 mph four-seamer into the stands with two outs already on the board and was able to score Freddie Freeman, who got to first the at-bat before. This marked the second game in a row where Betts scored at least one run, and unlike in the Rockies’ first game, he actually got to reap the reward of his own efforts, instead of having to sacrifice his own at-bat for an RBI.

With three RBIs and counting over the past two games, is Betts back? Has his recent adjustment to his hand positioning on the bat unlocked his offensive game, or is it too early to make a declaration either way? Well, considering Betts got a hit on his very next at-bat as well, it’s safe to say he’s swinging it well in Southern California.
