Dodgers’ Dave Roberts weighs in on MLB All-Star Game Sandlot tribute
The 2026 MLB All-Star Game was not only about celebrating America’s Pastime. The objective was also to celebrate the country itself. Players signed a faux Declaration of Independence after being introduced to the always boisterous crowd in Citizens Bank Park, emphasizing a strong message of patriotism just 10 days after the United States’ 250th anniversary. The sentiment carried on throughout the night, highlighted by a grand tribute to one of the most iconic baseball films ever made.
During a break in the action, children rode their bikes out onto the field as fireworks covered the Philly skies and Ray Charles’ rendition of “America the Beautiful” played on the big screen. Anyone who has ever exclaimed the words “you’re killing me, Smalls!” should recognize this display as an ode to 1993’s “The Sandlot.”
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who served as the National League skipper on Tuesday, expressed his appreciation for the gesture after the Midsummer Classic concluded. “Major League Baseball did a great job with that,” he said, per Daniel Mader of The Sporting News, following the NL’s 4-0 loss versus the American League.
While the aforementioned kids interacted with and received tips from superstars like Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Freddie Freeman and Jacob Misiorowski, the remaining ballplayers stood on the side with sparklers in hand.
MLB catches plenty of criticism, but it delivered a big slice of Americana to all the fans watching. The All-Star Game itself proved to be a rather forgettable affair, but it was a nice way to say a belated Happy Birthday to the U.S.
