Dodgers’ Dave Roberts reveals why Justin Wrobleski left scoreless game at 67 pitches
The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff was on point on Tuesday, blanking the Tampa Bay Rays in a 1-0 win to come within one win away for sweeping their midweek series. On Tuesday, it was Justin Wrobleski who drew the start for the Dodgers, and he was once again reliable, recording six innings of shutout baseball while allowing just three hits and striking out five.
Wrobleski got the win for his rock-solid performance, which the Dodgers bullpen was able to preserve. However, a few curious eyebrows were raised after the Dodgers decided to pull the 25-year-old lefty despite throwing just 67 pitches on the night. Some were wondering whether or not Wrobleski had picked up a knock.
After the game, manager Dave Roberts confirmed to Jack Harris of the California Post that the Dodgers simply decided to limit Wrobleski’s workload after he suited up on Tuesday on just four days of rest.
The Dodgers have typically been cautious in their handling of their pitching rotation this season, giving their players up to six days of rest to distribute the workload and preserve the health of their starters.
Wrobleski started on the 11th of June in an 8-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he started on the 16th, giving him just four full days of rest. Before that, the Dodgers were giving the young lefty six days of rest between starts. He exited that game with a thigh injury scare.
The Dodgers have had the luxury to utilize their pitching rotation in this manner, owing to the team’s depth. They even had the luxury of limiting Wrobleski’s workload even though he was cruising on Tuesday — with Will Klein, Kyle Hurt, and Tanner Scott recording three consecutive 1-2-3 innings to shut the door for a Rays team that did not have it from the plate on the night.
On Wednesday, it will be Shohei Ohtani’s turn to start for the Dodgers on the mound, and it will be interesting to see if they will limit him in a similar manner even though he has six full days of rest from pitching.
