Jasprit Bumrah clears fitness test ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

Jasprit Bumrah has cleared his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is now set to be part of India's squad for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The assessment was completed on July 31, 2026, confirming that the pacer has recovered from the impact injury he sustained during the ODI series against England.

Bumrah had missed the third ODI at Lord's due to that injury and his place in the Sri Lanka Test squad had been made subject to fitness clearance. With the clearance now granted, he is expected to travel with the Indian side to the island nation ahead of the series.

"Jasprit Bumrah has recovered from his impact injury. He has cleared the fitness tests mandated by the CoE. Hopefully, he will be available for both games as he is integral to the team's plans," a senior BCCI official said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

What does Bumrah's availability mean for India's injury-hit pace attack?

India's pace bowling resources have taken a significant hit ahead of the Sri Lanka series. Harshit Rana has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, while Nitish Kumar Reddy is unavailable due to a quadriceps injury. Akash Deep is also continuing his rehabilitation following stress reactions in his back and is not yet available for selection.

In that context, Bumrah's clearance carries considerable weight for the touring side. The first Test is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test to follow on August 23 in Colombo. Washington Sundar is also set to miss the first Test due to a hamstring strain, adding to India's personnel concerns ahead of the series opener.

How important is this series for India's WTC campaign?

India currently sit fifth in the World Test Championship standings with a points percentage of 48.15 from nine matches, which includes four wins and four defeats. Sri Lanka are placed sixth, having recorded one win and one loss from four Tests in the current WTC cycle.

India need to win at least seven of their nine remaining WTC matches to stay in contention for a place in the final. The two Tests against Sri Lanka therefore carry direct relevance to India's standing in the table, making Bumrah's confirmed availability an important development for the side's campaign.
