This is a game steeped in history and rivalry and one that has seen Chelsea prevail predominantly and convincingly over Tottenham in recent years.

So much so that Tottenham fans often dread facing the Blues in upcoming matches especially those all important ones as they know it’ll likely end in a loss.

Chelsea have won 15 of their last 19 match ups against Spurs, losing only twice and drawing the other two.

However, in terms of friendlies that could all be changed especially as both teams will make a whole host of changes at half time from their starting XI, as this is a key time for Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso and Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi to see how certain players fit into their systems and with other players.

Chelsea missing key players from pre-season tour

Chelsea have once again been busy in the transfer market, so much so they have a plethora of defenders and midfielders to choose from.

Their huge squad does make it difficult for punters to know who will play, where and when but especially so in friendlies and with new manager Alonso looking to shake things up on previous games.

Their new signing Morgan Rogers just signed for a huge £119million after returning from the World Cup with England, but due to his efforts in north America he won’t be heading to Australia and Asia to join the team for their pre-season tour.

Reece James will also be missing from the squad after his run in the World Cup with England too.

Chelsea have taken 28 players omitting the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Trevoh Chalobah, Malo Gusto, Basiashile Mukinayi, Axel Disasi, Pedro Neto, Moises Caicedo, Geovany Quenda, and Marc Guiu along with the already mentioned omissions of Rogers and James.

Crucially, this group of players are those that: enjoyed World Cup runs, are likely transfer targets to be sold, or are injured, giving some youngsters the time to also shine on tour amongst the some senior squad members.

Spurs busy rebuilding

But of course, the Spurs squad could be looking quite different with their summer of completely changing their starting XI is dramatically underway.

Spurs are taking 35 players with them on their New Zealand and Australia pre-season tour.

Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have already joined over the summer, however Senesi will be missing from the tour due to his World Cup involvements.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr have been granted extended leave following their appearances at the World Cup, while Pedro Porro, Senesi, Cristian Romero and Djed Spence will also not travel having reached the latter stages of this summer’s tournament.

It could be quite a cagey affair as a result, but with plenty of chances given the shake up to the squads over the summer on top of the fact it’s a friendly.

Their previous friendly which was part of a summer pre-season charity tournament ended 2-2 back in August 2021 and it looks likely to be a similar kind of result.
