Tigers’ Tarik Skubal price tag described as ‘enormous’ according to MLB Insider

The Detroit Tigers are on the clock, as they have less than three days left to decide whether or not they’d be trading away ace lefty Tarik Skubal. Skubal is going to be a free agent at season’s end, and the sharks are already circling around him, so it makes sense, for the sake of the franchise’s long-term health, to trade him away to get some value for him before he hits the open market.

It looks like the Tigers will be leaving it until the very end to decide if they are going to pull the trigger on a Skubal trade. There is no shortage of suitors for the 29-year-old southpaw, and Detroit is remaining steadfast in maintaining a high asking price for their ace even though there is a chance that he ends up being a mere rental for the stretch run.

“Price tag on pitching superstar Tarik Skubal described as enormous by multiple interested execs. About 70 hours to go, so there’s time,” Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote on his official X account.

The Tigers are well within their right to ask for the world, but they are losing leverage by the second. They entered play on Friday against the Athletics with a 51-58 record, so it’s not like chasing a postseason spot is that far-fetched, but the odds aren’t in their favor. They may be just four games back of the third and final AL Wild Card spot at present, but they have five teams ahead of them.

The whole MLB world knows that the Tigers will benefit immensely from trading Skubal, but the 29-year-old’s excellence and consistency over the years makes him well worth the acquisition, even as a rental. This is drumming up the bidding war among multiple contending teams.

So even then, despite losing leverage with each passing second, Detroit should be primed for a major return — provided, of course, that they decide to actually trade him away.
