Hall of Fame forward and ESPN analyst Charles Barkley can’t wait for the upcoming 2026-27 season, where the Eastern Conference could be more competitive than the West. After Barkley weighed in on LeBron James’ legacy before he decided to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, Sir Charles revisited that conversation following James’ shocking free-agent decision. While most expected LeBron to return to one of his former teams, either the Miami Heat or the Cleveland Cavs, he chose Philly.

However, the 76ers aren’t the only powerhouse in the Eastern Conference that could threaten the defending-champion New York Knicks next season. Barkley is also thinking about up-and-coming teams such as the Atlanta Hawks, the Orlando Magic, and the Indiana Pacers, ultimately topping the Western Conference teams.

“One of the dark secrets that nobody is talking about: the Eastern Conference might be better than the Western Conference right now,” Barkley said. “There’s no team in the East that’s bad. Atlanta, Boston, the Knicks, Orlando, Indiana—the only bad team is probably the Brooklyn Nets.”

Each of the teams mentioned has made significant changes between last year’s trade deadline and the offseason. The Hawks got out of the Trae Young business when they traded him to the Washington Wizards in exchange for a pair of veteran shooters in CJ McCollum and Corey Kisspert.

McCollum agreed to a one-year deal, worth $21 million. Atlanta also traded Zaccharie Risacher in a three-team deal that landed them Ryan Nembhard from the Dallas Mavericks and Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder, reuniting him with Aaron Wiggins.

The Boston Celtics shocked the NBA world, trading All-Star Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, who eliminated them after Boston blew a 3-1 lead for the first time in franchise history. However, the Celtics, leaning on Jayson Tatum to lead them toward a new era, have surrounded him with a better supporting cast than the one Brown led to the second-best record in the Eastern Conference standings last season.

The Celtics signed defending champion New York Knicks’ center Mitchell Robinson and veteran guard Mike Conley Jr. before trading for Paul George. At the same time, the Indiana Pacers will look to build off their trip to the NBA Finals in 2025.

Following a gap year due to Tyrese Haliburton’s devastating ruptured Achilles injury in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, the Pacers traded for Ivica Zubac from the LA Clippers in exchange for Bennedict Mathurin and Isaiah Jackson at last year’s trade deadline. This replaces Myles Turner, who bolted to the Milwaukee Bucks via free agency.

Indiana also signed Kelly Oubre Jr. to a two-year deal, and Larry Nance Jr. to a one-year contract. While a team like the Orlando Magic will look to build off of last year’s playoff appearance, a team like the Pacers will look to return to the postseason. Plus, other wild-card teams, such as the Wizards, who landed Young and Anthony Davis before drafting the first overall pick, AJ Dybantsa, are expected to enter the playoff picture next year.

Still, no other team in the Eastern Conference will garner more attention than the revamped 76ers. Signing the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in LeBron James to a veteran’s minimum was the icing on the cake for a Sixers team that also traded for Brown. Key free-agent signings such as Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade have also elevated expectations, as Philly will be viewed as the Knicks’ No. 1 contender ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Hall of Fame forward Charles Barkley recently ranked his all-time list, which is subject to change depending on how LeBron James’ tenure with the 76ers ends. James’ two-year contract gives him a window to compete for a fifth and potentially sixth NBA championship.

However, before James announced his decision to join the 76ers, Barkley slotted LeBron to third on his list, trailing Hall of Fame guards Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan as his all-time best player.

“The three best basketball players I’ve ever seen in order; Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James,” Barkley said. “And I’ll tell you guys the difference, nobody ever said Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant was a nice guy. Now, LeBron’s a nice guy. Michael and Kobe, they want to kill you at all costs. That’s what separates them. Everybody likes LeBron, he’s a nice man. He’s a great, great basketball player. But them other two guys, they were fanatics. They were dangerous.”

Then, James returned to the Cavs to join forces with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love before spending eight seasons with the Lakers. LeBron won his last time alongside Anthony Davis in 2020.

However, at this stage of his career, James, who will turn 42 this upcoming season, there’s nothing wrong with latching onto the 76ers, which is his best path toward winning a championship. LeBron joins All-Stars Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and a budding star in VJ Edgecombe, which Barkley says could change the order of his list if James wins a pair of titles.

“If he wins back-to-back championships and walks away this thing at 44, 45,” Barkley said. “I’ll say something I ain’t never said before. This dude, I think I just saw the greatest basketball player ever.”

Perhaps Charles Barkley can’t fault LeBron James winning a title amidst the final chapter of his 25+ year career, considering what the Hall of Fame forward did in the twilight of his. Barkley teamed up with Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Scottie Pippen, and the Rockets in 1997, hoping to take down Michael Jordan and the Bulls.

However, the Rockets failed to reach the NBA Finals, coming up short against the Jazz in the 1997 Western Conference Finals and then against the Lakers in the opening round of the 1998 playoffs.

Either way, 76ers forward LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul, had words for Barkley’s strong take on his client’s legacy.

James’ longtime agent responded to Hall of Fame forward and NBA analyst Charles Barkley’s claim that LeBron only hops on teams that are pre-filled with a strong supporting cast tailored-made for a trip to the NBA Finals.

Paul also doesn’t appreciate the narrative that teams have to bend over backward for James once he arrives. For Paul, the idea that teams find success after landing LeBron is more accurate, whereas he doesn’t subscribe to the notion that his client brings baggage and changes for a franchise.

“The things that perceive is so far from the truth,” Rich said of James. “One of those things is like, okay. I think someone said, “Oh if you sign LeBron comes with all this, he doesn’t come with anything.” He comes with himself…. But again, I think people have this idea that he’s asking for all these things. We were not raised like that just first and foremost. We were not raised like that. We were actually raised the opposite way don’t ask nobody for anything if you can’t get it yourself.

“Second part of that is, one thing he does ask for is to be in a position to win, and if being in a position to win is a negative ask, then what are you in team sports in that case? Like, I just don’t understand that you can’t have it both ways.”

As for faulting James for choosing the best path toward a championship, Paul can’t understand why some view that as a bad thing. For those who call LeBron a title chaser as opposed to a player sticking with one team, Rich wonders what else is a superstar of his client’s caliber supposed to chase, especially in the final stages of his illustrious career.

“It’s confusing because what are you supposed to chase? Aluminum cans? I don’t think he chases anything; I just think you want to put yourself in the best competitive position to have a chance of winning,” Paul said. “It’s very confusing when you see players talk about ring chasing. Especially players who don’t have a ring. — I just don’t understand how people get up everyday and try to nitpick at you for trying to put yourself in the best position.”

LeBron James, still playing at a high level after eight seasons with the Lakers, which is the longest tenure of his career, should settle in nicely with the 76ers. Considering that the Sixers’ ideal blend of young and veteran experience gives James a Finals MVP in Jaylen Brown, an All-Star in Tyrese Maxey, and a future Hall of Fame center in Joel Embiid, LeBron will carry a lighter burden than he did with the Lakers.

James averaged 20.9 points on 51.5% shooting, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game last season. His unprecedented run at 41 is something the NBA has never seen before, including a 24-year career, which is impressive in and of itself. The fact that LeBron is still playing at an All-Star level gives the 76ers the best chance at a championship in over 25 years.

The defending-champion Knicks will have their hands full, as they receive their opponents’ best effort on a nightly basis, and with the rest of the Eastern Conference teams improving their rosters ahead of the 2026-27 season, it’ll be fun to watch how it all unfolds.
