MLB rumors: Bombshell Cubs-Mariners trade floated before deadline

If the 2026 MLB season were to end tomorrow, the Chicago Cubs will comfortably be sitting in a postseason spot, as they stand in pole position among all NL Wild Card teams. They are six games back of the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead, which isn’t even that big of a gap to close with 52 games remaining in the campaign.

To that end, the Cubs are looking to fortify their squad for the stretch run. According to the rumor mill, Chicago is very interested in acquiring a starting pitcher, as they are leaving no stone unturned in their search for an impact player to add alongside Matt Boyd, Shota Imanaga, and Ben Brown in their rotation.

In fact, the Cubs, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, are even looking into acquiring 27-year-old starter Emerson Hancock for the Seattle Mariners in a trade that could be mutually beneficial in terms of addressing each other’s roster needs. Hancock currently has a 3.26 ERA on the season in 110.1 innings (20 starts).

As per Nightengale, the Cubs “could have the best shot” at a trade for Hancock if they’re willing to include Seiya Suzuki and Matt Shaw in trade talks.

It would be surprising if the Cubs were to trade Suzuki away, as this would simply worsen the big-league squad. Suzuki is sporting an OPS of .835 this year and he’s been a crucial member of Chicago’s roster this year. But he’s in the final year of his contract, while Hancock has four years left of team control after 2026.

Suzuki could help aid the Mariners’ offensive woes in 2026 (they rank 28th in runs scored this season), and giving up Hancock could be a way for them to acquire a sweet-hitting Japanese outfielder who could be willing to stay in Seattle for the long haul (perhaps following in Ichiro’s footsteps).

Shaw, on the other hand, is only 24 years of age and is currently on the injured list. The Cubs may not be as willing to part ways with him. But it takes talent to acquire talent, and something has to give for Chicago.
