Dodgers’ Dave Roberts provides huge Kiké Hernández injury update
The Los Angeles Dodgers have not been operating with their full complement for much of the season. The back-to-back defending World Series champions are once again in first place in the National League West, but they are just 1/2 game ahead of the San Diego Padres.
The Dodgers are playing fairly well, having won seven of their last 10 games. They will likely be getting utility man Kike Hernandez back on the active roster shortly. Hernandez has been on a rehab assignment with the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City. He will play with that team Saturday night and then return to the Dodgers after that.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says that Hernandez will be in the lineup Monday and play third base for the Dodgers. He will take the place of Max Muncy, who has a wrist problem after getting hit by a pitch. Muncy should be able to return to the Dodgers lineup in the games that follow.
Hernandez has not played this season as he recovers from the elbow surgery that he had in the offseason. He has played in 12 big league seasons, including nine with the Dodgers and three with the Boston Red Sox.
Hernandez hit 10 home runs and drove in 35 runs while playing in 92 games last season. He had his best season in 2021 with the Red Sox when he bashed 20 home runs and drove in 60 runs while playing in 134 games. He also hit 21 home runs while playing for the Dodgers in the 2018 season.
Hernandez has hit 16 postseason home runs and driven in 42 runs while playing in 103 playoff and World Series games.
