Dodgers’ Dave Roberts not expecting IL stint for Max Muncy

After taking a 96 mph fastball to his right wrist in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ opening contest against the Milwaukee Brewers, fans openly wondered if LA’s finest would find themselves without their rock, Max Muncy, for some period of time.

While Muncy’s initial X-rays came back negative, that didn’t necessarily mean the veteran third baseman was out of the water just yet. Fortunately, according to Dave Roberts, it looks like Los Angeles has dodged a bullet, as he noted before Saturday’s contest in Wisconsin to The Athletic’s Katie Woo.

“Dave Roberts says Max Muncy (wrist, HBP) will be down through the weekend and the team will reevaluate back in LA on Monday. Kiké Hernández will play his final rehab game with OKC tonight and is set to join the Dodgers on Monday as well,” Woo wrote.

“Dave Roberts said he’d be surprised if this is an IL stint for Muncy, but didn’t rule out additional scans come Monday if needed.”

Since landing with the Dodgers in 2018, Muncy has been one of Los Angeles’ most consistent contributors regardless of who was placed around him. A few months away from his 36th birthday, Muncy has maintained his usual level of production, hitting above his career average at .259 while blasting 12 home runs over 190 plate appearances, good for the best mark on the Dodgers roster so far this season.

While Muncy was already expected to have Saturday off for the Dodgers, with Roberts going with Santiago Espinal to combat left-handed pitcher Robert Gasser, it will be interesting to see how Los Angeles will handle their lineups until they get their everyday third baseman back, be that a steady dose of the former Toronto Blue Jays utility man, more Miguel Rojas, or bringing Alex Freeland up from Triple A after a strong run in OKC.
