Dodgers’ 3-minute Kike Hernandez secret to stealing Edwin Díaz from Mets
The Los Angeles Dodgers have gotten off to a strong start to the 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 11-4 heading into the third week of the season. The Dodgers have integrated key free agent signings, including Edwin Diaz, into the fold, and thus far, the results have been mostly positive.
This week, Diaz will face his former team, the New York Mets, whom he left in free agency this offseason to join Los Angeles, and recently, Dodgers star Kike Hernandez broke down how the team was able to lure Diaz away from New York, including a three-minute voice memo he left him.
Katie Woo and Will Sammon of The Athletic noted that Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman “asked if Hernández and his wife, Mariana, could reach out to Díaz and his wife, Nashaly, to share their experience with the Dodgers and how the team cares for players’ families.”
“I told him, ‘I don’t think you’re going to regret it one bit if you sign here,’” Hernández said.
Diaz was also moved by a promise the Dodgers made him as they went after him in free agency.
“The Dodgers told me if I came to Los Angeles and we have the chance to sign you, we will make you a Hall of Famer,” said Diaz.
The signing of Diaz did not help the Dodgers fend off accusations that they are simply buying championships by massively outspending the competition and bringing in premium talent, but it does increase the likelihood of the team adding a third straight World Series championship to their trophy case this fall.
The Dodgers and Mets are slated to get their series underway on Monday night.
